Sources and Citations

How we ground our work in the historical record

    Source Hierarchy

Whenever possible we rely on primary sources first, then peer-reviewed scholarship, then reputable secondary works.

    Primary Repositories

    Academic Journals

    • Journal of American History
    • William and Mary Quarterly
    • American Historical Review
    • Journal of the Civil War Era

    Citation Style

Articles use plain-language attribution within paragraphs (e.g., "according to the National Archives") with linked references at the end of major claims when applicable. We avoid undisclosed paraphrasing of copyrighted secondary works.

All historical images used on Whitebeavers are public-domain or openly licensed (Creative Commons). Each image carries a visible credit identifying the source repository.

    Reader Verification

If a claim is unclear, write to contact@whitebeavers.com and we will share the underlying sources.
