Margaret Holloway

Her work sits at the intersection of public history, architectural heritage, and slow travel. She holds a Master of Arts in Public History from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Virginia. Before launching Whitebeavers, she spent nearly a decade contributing research and feature writing to history-focused publications, museum exhibition guides, and nonprofit heritage projects.

Margaret's reporting is grounded in primary sources: National Park Service records, Library of Congress manuscripts, Smithsonian collections, peer-reviewed historical scholarship, and on-site field research. She has visited historic sites in more than 40 U.S. states, and she approaches every article with the understanding that heritage travel is not nostalgia — it is a way of reading the layered, often contested, past of the American landscape.

Her areas of focus include the colonial and Revolutionary Atlantic, the antebellum South and the history of slavery, 19th-century industrial and labor history, Indigenous history and survival in the Southwest, and the preservation of vernacular architecture. She is especially interested in the stories that are not on the main plaque: the people, labor, and conflicts that shaped historic cities but are often omitted from tourism narratives.

At Whitebeavers, Margaret oversees editorial direction, sources the photography and archival references, and writes the majority of long-form features. She also manages the corrections desk and reviews reader feedback. All published work is produced independently; Whitebeavers does not accept sponsored travel, paid placement, or tour-operator commissions.
